High winds and overcast skies kept my friends and I from realizing optimal images of birds in flight with dramatic light last weekend at Bombay Hook NWR.  I think this was my favorite shot of the day, which if conditions would have been better, I would have never gotten.

Sliver

Caught a beautiful crescent moon in the pre-dawn hour before sunrise on Sunday morning at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge.  Unfortunately, rising at 4:30 am didn’t get me there in time to catch it right at the horizon.  I guess that’s for another day….

From a particularly outrageous cold morning a couple of weeks ago at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge.

Wanderings

December 3, 2012

After a lackluster morning sunrise shoot at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday morning, we took off early to do some discovery work along the coastal highway of the Delaware Bay.  We stumbled upon this wonderful abandoned old farm that is managed by DE. Div. of Fish & Wildlife.  Can’t wait to get back there some time to shoot in a better light.

Sunrise Over Bombay Hook

Perfect timing for this American Bald Eagle to glide through my shot just as the sun was peeking over the edge of the horizon at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge.

A Study

Funny how sometimes things work themselves out entirely on their own.  With little to no processing, other than converting to black and white, this image took on the look and feel of an artists study.  A rendering of sorts.

New Moon Over Bombay Hook National Wildlife Preserve

I took a quick and last minute trip down to Bombay Hook National Wildlife Preserve last weekend with a couple of my good friends.  Not, that I have anyone in my life that I would identify as a bad friend.  Anyway.  The full moon was due up on Monday night.  If you witness the moon rise on the day before the full moon, it appears to be full….and the added bonus (photographically speaking) is that it will rise just as the sun is setting.  So, if you ‘shoot the moon’ the landscape will be nicely lit with the warm tones of the setting sun.  EASY!

This panoramic is a 7-image vertical pano shot at 52mm….with an 8th shot of the moon taken with a 400mm lens and combined in post processing.  This wasn’t the image I had in mind…but we try our best to adapt.

Red Fox at Sunrise, Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge

I’ve never sold myself as much of a wildlife photographer.  I spend my days and nights hiking in the great outdoors in pursuit of art.  Natural art.  Seeking out great light and interesting subjects.  My true passion is in the abstract.  Though, I’m not sure I’ve posted more than a couple of those types of images here on my website.  I should do something about that.  On the other hand, I have posted quite a few on my Flickr Site.

Anyway….because I do spend so much of my time out hiking and exploring, it’s only natural that I come across wildlife from time to time.  More times than not it’s usually whitetail deer.  They’re about as plentiful as dogs around these parts and I rarely, if ever, bother taking any photos.  On a recent trip down to Bombay Hook NWR I was blessed with a curious red fox that appeared before me just as the sun rose above the horizon, washing him and the landscape in the most glorious warm light.  I dropped to the ground to get an eye level perspective (I actually had him looking down on me!)…as well as to eliminate my super long shadow in the foreground….and walked away with what I believe is one of my top 5 images of the year.  I was so pleased with the result.
